Week 3 Reflection: I finally decided!

I finally decided on a topic for my action research and I'm excited about it!

How has the removal of an extended academic learning tutorial period affected our students’ achievement?

The web conferences have been very helpful and I've enjoyed following several classmates and reading everyone's posts. It was comforting to know I wasn't the only one having a hard time. But now that I finally decided and worked to construct a solid plan, I feel like things are moving and I'm happy about the direction I'm going. I am excited about what my research can possibly do for students in our school district and elsewhere.

  1. Sounds like you are doing fine now. You have a good plan of action to follow. I also agree this has been a tough assingment and it can get very frustrating at times

  2. Your topic is interesting, because I think we all know what you will learn....it does have a negative impact on achievement. Do you know why that decision was made? I would suspect it was a funding issue. It is very sad that schools have to make those kinds of decisions, not based on research, but on available dollars.
Does your district have grant writers at the administration level? Our district put a person in place whose sole purpose is to assist district, campuses and teachers in find grant funding.

  3. It was tough for me to settle on atopic and had help from my site supervisor. I understand your frustration but now you have a plan. I'm very interested in your results because the school I'm currently at has removed the extended tutorial period.

  4. Kate,

I think you have made a good choice. YOu and I have similar topics dealing with tutorials, hopefully we may be able to feed eachothe some ideas.

    Good Luck

  5. We have also done away with extended day, although some of our teachers have asked the parents of our struggling students if they can stay for tutoring a fews a week or come early before school.

  6. Finally!! It was difficult for me too, finding a topic that would benefit me and my students. I can't wait to read about your project. Currently my school has an extended period for academic intervention, but it's not working the way we would like it so as a member of the intervention committee we are in discussion of refining and implementing a new bell schedule next year. Majority of those on the committe feel we should add on an extra 15-20 minutes to each class as an intervention period. This will be something new to our school and for our group of students I think it will make a world of difference in capturing those students that don't come to tutoring when they need it. As we add on our intervention, your school is eliminating it. Can't wait to see your final analsis. Good Luck!
