What I've learned about action research...

I am very excited about action research and how it can positively impact my experiences and effectiveness in education.  I am even more excited about how action research can positively impact the students in our schools.  Constant self-reflection is important as leaders and educators.  Evaluating the results of the reflection and acting appropriately can lead to effective change. Action research sounds like an ever-present and on-going process in order to become a great leader.

I believe action research can be a more effective way to improve ourselves than the typical staff development. It allows us to evaluate our current problems, concerns, and beliefs within ourselves and/or our schools. Change can then be initiated sooner rather than later, under our own circumstances. Action research allows for individuals to take ownership of their learning.

I look forward to using action research in my educational career and my personal life! Is what I'm doing working? Is my belief about something so strong it is negatively affecting others? Is what I'm allowing to occur affecting our school environment in a positive or negative way? We have a problem and/or concern in the school, so let's look at the data and collaborate to plan a resolution.

For me, it will be imperative I schedule time for inquiry. I easily get overwhelmed with my current leadership responsibilities. As a principal, I know those responsibilities will increase substantially. Scheduling this time will allow for necessary reflection and inquiry. I'm encouraged this will result in a sense of control and contribute to my professional health. I am excited about the concept of action research and look forward to using it as a necessary professional tool.
